About Altai Biosphere Reserve

The Altai Biosphere Reserve, established in 1932, protects a large section of the Altai Mountains, a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve located in the Altai Republic, Russia. It spans rugged alpine terrain, pristine river valleys, glaciers, and forested slopes, serving as a vital stronghold for biodiversity in Central Asia. The reserve harbors a remarkable variety of flora, including endemic and relict species, and fauna such as the elusive snow leopard, Altai argali sheep, Siberian ibex, and brown bear. Historically, the region has deep cultural significance tied to indigenous Altai peoples, with ancient petroglyphs and archaeological sites located nearby. Outdoor recreation in the reserve centers on multi-day trekking through remote wilderness areas, wildlife observation, and scientific expeditions. Landmark natural features include Mount Belukha, the highest peak of the Altai and a sacred mountain, as well as the Katun and Chulyshman river valleys, known for their sheer cliffs and clear mountain waters. Visitors are attracted to the park’s unmatched scenic vistas, peaceful solitude, and opportunities to experience intact Siberian ecosystems. Due to its remote location and strict conservation regime, visitor numbers remain low, preserving the reserve’s wild character. The Altai Biosphere Reserve remains a critical site for ecological research, natural heritage preservation, and cultural tourism in the Russian Altai region.
